Endometriosis

What Is Endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a condition whereby uterine lining tissue grows on the ovaries or in the abdominal or pelvic cavity of a woman's body. This tissue should only be located inside the uterus.

This condition effects one in ten women in America and it is estimated that 30-40% of women with endometriosis may not be able to have children.

Normally hormones signal the growth of uterine lining to prepare for a possible pregnancy during a women's menstrual cycle, If no pregnancy occurs, this lining is shed and expelled from the body with your period.

With endometriosis, uterine tissue grows in other areas like the pelvic cavity, abdomen and ovaries and when it comes time for the tissue to shed, the tissue that has migrated has no way of leaving the body. This results in blood accumulating in these areas and adhesions are created and scar tissue develops. It can distort a woman's internal anatomy and can cause infertility.

Symptoms Of Endometriosis

cramps

Pain Associated With Endometriosis May include:

~ before/during/after menstruation
~ during ovulation
~ in the bowel during menstruation
~ when passing urine
~ during or after sexual intercourse
~ in the lower back region
~ severe cramps

Some women suffer from pain while many women do not realize they have the disease until they try to become pregnant and experience problems. It is possible to have massive growths of lesions in their abdomen or pelvic areas and not know it. Endometriosis can range from a mild condition to a severe disorder.

If you have any reason to suspect you may have endometriosis, you need to schedule an appointment with a physician and have a pelvic exam.

Treating Endometriosis

An experienced practitioner can tell much from a pelvic exam, but the only definitive diagnosis is surgical. We recommend a natural approach as a first step to see if it provides symptom relief.

Natural Treatments-

Some of the simplest steps you can take to help control endometriosis are:

# Change your diet, eliminate non-organic dairy products, beef and chicken. Choose organic foods that contain no added growth hormones, (there's no reason to limit their consumption).

# Support hormonal balance. Eat more nutrient-rich foods, such as vegetables, soy, cold-water fish and fiber. This will help clear excess estrogen from the body

# Be mindful of carbohydrates. To support overall hormonal balance, follow a whole foods diet. This includes limiting alcohol intake.

# To limit endogenous estrogen production, maintain healthy levels of body fat. Excess weight often means excess estrogen since body fat is a secondary production site for estrogen.

# Vitamins and minerals help supplement your daily food intake, including calcium and magnesium. (Omega-3 essential fatty acids work as a natural anti-inflammatory.

# Take an effective herbal suppliment to support the health of the uterus and fallopian tubes.

Conventional Medical Treatments-

The above mentioned, natural methods, provide the body with support for hormonal balance and many women find relief from their endometriosis symptoms using those methods. However, there are also many effective conventional remedies short of surgery. Start with the natural methods, and if you need further support, consider the following treatments:

# NSAID's are available by prescription to decrease pain and inflammation when needed. (Ibuprofen, naproxen, and other antiprostaglandins)

# Hormone contraceptive methods such as birth control pills, patch or ring, or Depo-Provera injections can help with managing your endometriosis.

# If less-invasive preventative and conventional approaches have failed to provide relief, in extreme cases, surgical treatment may prove the only option.
