Levonelle Information

Levonelle is also generically known under the name of 'the morning after pill'. This medicine is used in order to reduce the chances of getting pregnant after having unprotected sex. This medicine is known to contain the active ingredient called levonorgestrel (a synthetic derivative of progesterone, a natural female sex hormone). During a woman's regular menstrual cycle, an egg is released from the ovaries once it has matured. Then, the ovary produces progesterone, thus preventing the release of other eggs. This medicine’s main ingredients are able to trick the organism, making it think that ovulation has already occured, because of its high levels of levonorgestrel (synthetic progesterone). In this way, taking Levonelle can prevent the ovaries from releasing an egg.

The intake of this medicine (Levonelle) can also increase the regular thickness of the mucus that is naturally found at the womb’s neck, thus making crossing the vagina into the cervix even more difficult for a regular sperm. Because the sperm can lo longer enter the womb, successful fertilization of an egg is more unlikely.  

Levonelle can also somehow alter the womb’s lining, thus preventing the lining from preparing itself for a fertilized egg. Therefore, even if the egg is released from the ovaries and even if it is somehow fertilized by a sperm, it is unable to implant itself into the womb’s lining and pregnancy does not occur.  

It has been estimated that almost 85 per cent of all possible pregnancies can be prevented if the woman takes Levonelle within 72 hours of unprotected sexual intercourse. The pill is known to be more effective the earlier it is taken. We strongly recommend you to take it as soon as possible after having unprotected sex (it is much safer than delaying it to the third day).

• Levonelle cannot be purchased from a pharmacy by a girl who is younger than 16 except in extreme circumstances. If a patient (girl) under 16 needs to take this medicine, she should consult a physician, a hospital’s casualty department or a family planning clinic. Several hospital minor injuries departments are also known to provide this medicine.
• Before you purchase Levonelle, the pharmacist will probably ask about your last menstrual period and about the time when you last had a sexual intercourse (this is to ensure that this drug can help you). You may use this medicine anytime during your menstrual period, excepting when your menstrual period is late. In this case, you should alert the pharmacist, as you could already be pregnant.  
• You should take the Levonelle pill as soon as possible (no later than 72 h after, and preferably within 12 hours after an unprotected sexual intercourse).  If you are sick within a couple of hours after taking the pill, you should take another one at once. You ought to consult your personal doctor, pharmacist, for further advice and recommendations. You can obtain another tablet from any of them.
• Intake of this medicine might make your next menstrual period come later or earlier than it is regularly expected by a couple of days. If your subsequent period after you have used this drug is abnormal in any way or if it is more than a week late you might be pregnant. Alert your personal physician at once.  
• Such a medicine should not be used as a continuous contraceptive method. We strongly recommend you to use a barrier contraceptive method such as a cap or a condom at least until your next menstrual period.  
• This drug should only be seen and taken as an emergency measure. You must not take this drug on a regular basis, as it may lead to an abnormal disruption of your regular menstrual period.
• Levonelle cannot guarantee that it will always be effective in preventing a pregnancy. If a pregnancy does occur after using this drug, it might be an ectopic one. You should alert your personal physician as soon as possible if you are experiencing any abnormal or sudden abdominal pain or if you see any changes in your normal period. This pill cannot protect you from any sexually transmitted diseases.

This drug should be used with caution (or it should not be used at all) in conditions such as:

• Glucose-galactose malabsorption, the Lapp lactase deficiency.
• Chron’s disorder
• Pregnancy
• Liver disorders.

You should not take this drug if you are suffering from an allergic reaction to any of Levonelle’s ingredients. You should alert your personal physician if you have allergies to foods, dyes, preservatives or any other type of substances.
