Nordette Information

Nordette is an Ethinyl Estradiol / Levonorgestrel product, used as an efficient oral contraceptive. It is a combination of natural and synthetic estrogens and progestins, which are similar to the sex hormones that the female body produces (estrogen and progesterone). The combination of Ethinyl Estradiol (estrogen) and Levonorgestrel (progestin) are effective in preventing ovulation and pregnancy, as generally a combination of estrogen and progestin has a stronger reaction than a single-ingredient based product. This product can be used for emergency contraception after an unprotected sexual contact.

Nordette Indications

Apart from their general usage as birth control pills and emergency pregnancy prevention, Nordette tablets can also be used to help regulate menstrual flow, in the treatment of acne or other hormone-related dysfunctions in females. Consult your doctor before starting treatment regarding the specific problem you are having.

Nordette Warnings

Let your health care specialist know if you have or ever had any of the following conditions:

• Blood clots
• Blood sugar problems, such as diabetes
• Cancer of the breast, cervix, ovary, uterus, vagina
• Unusual vaginal bleeding
• Depression
• Fibroids
• Gallbladder disease
• Heart or circulation problems
• High blood pressure
• Stroke
• Jaundice
• Liver disease
• Menstrual problems
• Migraine headaches
• Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)
• Tobacco smoker
• Any unusual or allergic reaction to estrogen or progestin, or other hormones, medicines, foods, dyes or preservatives
• Pregnant or trying to be pregnant
• Breast feeding.

Nordette Intake Guidelines

For general use of Nordette, it is recommended that treatment should be started on the first Sunday after you start your period or on the first day of your period. Nordette treatment should be started at a suitable time of day, and further intakes should be taken at the same time of day and in the order directed.

Nordette Dosage

Consult your doctor about the Nordette dosage most suitable for you. It is recommended that you follow the instructions exactly.
For emergency pregnancy prevention, take the first dose of Nordette as soon after the unprotected sexual contact as possible, preferably within 24 hours of the event but not later than 72 hours. The second dose MUST be taken 12 hours after the first, and consult your doctor about further dosage and intake schedule. DO NOT take extra pills. 

Nordette Overdose

You should at all times follow the exact Nordette prescription that your doctor has prescribed you. Do not take extra doses. If you think you suffer from an overdose contact your health care specialist or go to the nearest hospital as soon as possible.

Nordette Missed Dose

If you happen to miss one Nordette dose, take it as soon as you remember and continue with the regular schedule. In that case, taking two tablets in one day is allowed. It is recommended that you use a secondary method of contraception during that week, in addition to Nordette treatment. For three or more missed doses, abandoning the current treatment and starting a new cycle pack may be in order.

Nordette Side Effects

There should not be any serious Nordette side effects in healthy, non-smoking women as long as they closely follow the prescribed schedule.

The most serious Nordette side effects are related to blood clots and may require immediate medical attention or even emergency help. You should immediately contact your doctor or go to the nearest hospital if you experience:

• chest pains
• coughing up blood
• dizziness or fainting
• leg, arm or groin pains
• severe or sudden headaches
• severe stomach pain
• sudden shortness of breath
• sudden loss of coordination, especially on one side of the body
• swelling of the hands, feet or ankles, or rapid weight gain
• speech or vision problems
• weakness or numbness in the arms or legs, especially on one side of the body.

Apart from that, other Nordette severe side effects are rare. Consult your doctor if you experience:

• breast tissue changes or discharge
• changes in vaginal bleeding during your period or between your periods
• headaches or migraines
• increases in blood sugar, especially if you have diabetes
• increases in blood pressure, especially if you have or used to have high blood pressure
• symptoms of vaginal infections (itching, irritation or unusual discharge)
• tenderness in the upper abdomen
• vomiting
• yellowing of the eyes or skin

If you used Nordette for emergency prevention of pregnancy, such symptoms as nausea, headache, vomiting, breast tenderness, dizziness, abdominal pain or cramping are common. If you get any other symptoms, or recurring, prolonged or severe variants of those listed, contact your doctor as soon as possible to investigate the causes and take the appropriate course of action. After you finish your Nordette prescription you may notice changes in your next period or spotting. Should you not get a period within 21 days of taking your prescription, contact your doctor and get a pregnancy test.

Nordette interacts with the following drugs:

• anastrazole
• antibiotics or medicins for infections
• aprepitant
• barbiturate medicines for producing sleep or treating seizures (convulsions)
• bosentan
• carbamazepine
• caffeine
• clofibrate
• cyclosporine
• dantrolene
• doxercalciferol
• exemestane
• grapefruit juice
• hydrocortisone
• letrozole
• medicines for anxiety or sleeping problems
• medicines for mental depression
• medicines for diabetes
• mineral oil
• modafinil
• mycophenolate
• nefazodone
• oxcarbazepine
• phenytoin
• prednisolone
• ritonavir or other medicines for the treatment of HIV virus or AIDS
• selegiline
• soy isoflavones supplements
• St. John's wort
• tamoxifen or raloxifene
• testolactone
• theophylline
• topiramate
• warfarin
