Provera Information

Provera is a medicine that regulates menstruation and ovulation. This drug can also be used to prevent unwanted miscarriages, especially during the first weeks of pregnancy.

Provera Indications

Provera is a popular drug that is generally prescribed to female patients who are suffering from lack or menstruation or from unusual uterine bleeding. However, this product could also serve some other purposes (prevent or treat some other medical disorders) that have not been mentioned here.

Provera Warnings

You must not start a treatment with this medicine without your physician’s approval if you are suffering from:

• a blood-clotting or bleeding disease,
• any type of uterine or Breast Cancer, or
• gallbladder or liver disease;
• any kind of seizure disorders (this includes Epilepsy),
• asthma,
• migraine,
• heart disease,
• kidney disease,
• diabetes.

Patients who are suffering from any of the medical disorders that have been listed here might not be allowed to start taking Provera or might have to take in a lower dose of this medicine. They should undergo several medical exams during their intake of this product in order for their doctor to accurately and closely monitor their treatment with this drug.

It has been determined that postmenopausal female patients who are older than 65 that have followed a treatment with this medicine were more prone to developing dementia. Provera is a category D FDA pregnancy drug. Therefore, a treatment with this drug during pregnancy does harm a growing fetus, leading to severe birth defects.  It has not been determined whether this drug’s ingredients pass into the patient’s breast milk flow. If you are nursing an infant, you should ask your personal health care provider if you may start taking Provera.

Provera Intake Guidelines

Ask your personal physician to tell you how and when it is best for you to take your doses of Provera.  Do not disobey any of your doctor’s directions. If you failed to understand some of them, please refer to a nurse or to a pharmacist and ask them for further explanations. In order to find out more about this product, you should consult the drug’s label.

Each dose of Provera should be accompanied by a full glass of liquid. In order to prevent experiencing unwanted stomach upset, you should accompany your doses of this medicine with milk or food. You should try to take this medicine on a regular basis, preferably at the same time each day. Store this product away from heat and moisture. Do not keep it in the bathroom or near the kitchen sink. Keep Provera in a place that is far from the reach of both pets and children in order to avoid any accidents.

Provera Dosage

Provera Overdose

Although an overdose with Provera is not expected to trigger any lethal or life threatening symptoms, if you suspect that you are suffering from an overdose with this medicine you should seek immediate medical care. Alert your personal physician and contact your local poison control centre. The average symptoms that could be triggered by such a medical condition include vomiting, nausea, fluid retention, vaginal bleeding and / or breast discomfort.

Provera Missed Dose

If you miss one of your doses of Provera, you should take it in as soon as you recall. If it is already time for another prescribed dose, it is best to skip the one that you have missed and proceed with your regular dosing schedule. Do not use double doses of Provera without your doctor’s consent.

Provera Side Effects

You should stop your treatment with Provera at once and alert your personal health care provider as soon as possible if you start to experience any of these severe side effects:

• symptoms of an allergic reaction (such as throat closure; hives difficulty breathing; swelling of your tongue, lips, or face);
• breath shortness or chest pain;
• severe headache or migraines;
• a red, painful, swollen leg;
• visual changes;
• tingling or numbness in a leg or arm;
• side or stomach pain;
• heavy, prolonged, vaginal bleeding;
• yellowing of your eyes or skin.

You may continue taking Provera, but you should inform your personal physician if you develop any of these less severe, but more common symptoms and side effects:

• weight or appetite changes,
• swelling of your feet or hands,
• acne,
• depression,
• an increase in facial or body hair or abnormal hair loss,
• nausea,
• breast tenderness,
• insomnia or headache,
• changes in your regular voice,
• skin darkening.

Provera Drug Reactions

During your treatment with Provera you should avoid using any of these medicines, as they are known to harmfully interact with this product:

• insulin;
• aminoglutethimide (Cytadren);
• bromocriptine (Parlodel);
• phenobarbital (Luminal, Solfoton);
• promazine (Sparine), fluphenazine (Prolixin), chlorpromazine (Thorazine), perphenazine (Trilafon), mesoridazine (Serentil), prochlorperazine (Compazine), trifluoperazine (Stelazine) or thioridazine (Mellaril).
