The Contraceptive Sponge

Many Women Use A Contraceptive Sponge

Contraceptive sponges do not use hormones to prevent pregnancy and there are few side effects associated with their use. They are inserted vaginally, prior to intercourse and must be placed over the cervix correctly to be effective in trapping sperm and preventing their passage through the cervix into the female reproductive system. Spermicide is an important component of pregnancy prevention with the sponge.

How Do You Use A Birth Control Sponge?

To use a sponge, you need to first moisten it with water until it becomes foamy and then insert it into position, so that it sits over the cervix. A contraceptive sponge can be worn for 12 to 24 hours and it offers continuous protection during that time, regardless of how often you have sex. After having sex, it is necessary to wait six hours before removing the sponge.

Sponges offer no protection from STD's and it is recommended they be used in addition to a latex condom. Women who use contraceptive sponges have an increased risk of yeast infection and urinary tract infection. Improper use, such as leaving the sponge in too long, can result in toxic shock syndrome. Also, it is possible for the sponge to shred or tear and some people are allergic to the spermicide used in the sponge.

The sponge is about as effective as a diaphragm, but, like the cervical cap, it is less effective for women who have already borne children. The sponge does not protect against HIV/AIDS or STD's.
